“performance” - 2022~23
“All the world’s a stage, and we are all performers.” Through the physical imagery of masks and faces, and the combination of textiles, photography, and filming, Sammy explores the topic of self-identity and discusses the boundaries between “reality” and “performance” by comprising the concept of “reality” into two distinct parts: material reality and sensory reality.
In her definition, Material Reality refers to the physical existence of our environment and the objects within it. This tangible space serves as the stage for human interactions, much like a performance requires a physical setting.
Sensory Reality encompasses the subjective experiences of an individual, including emotions, senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell), and awareness. Emotions, controlled by the limbic system in the brain, are reactions to specific stimuli. Thus, individuals interact with the world in ways that parallel a performance, where they are both performers and audience members, engaging in a continuous interplay of actions and reactions.
Humans, being inherently social creatures, have always interacted within communities. These interactions, set against the vast stage of daily life, resemble an ongoing performance, raising questions about self-identity and authenticity: Who am I? Am I truly myself at this moment, or am I playing a role in society?
In this project, Sammy investigates these questions through the metaphor of masks, inspired by their historical use in performance and their psychological significance as described by Carl Jung. Jung's concept of the "persona" refers to the social mask individuals wear to make impressions on others while concealing their true nature.
“Each expression we make in a moment becomes a mask in the next, frozen in time and detached from our living face. This masking property of the face in social behavior underscores the fluidity of identity.” Sammy blends the physical and sensory realities, using masks as a form to depict the multiplicity of our social identities and the interplay between our true selves and the roles we perform.
I want to talking with you,
The figure within the mirror.
How would you decorate yourself?
The passions you cherish, the words you utter, the deeds you enact.
May I draw nearer?
May I unveil you, layer by layer?
What lies beneath your skin, your bone?
Is it emptiness?
If so, I shall inquire your name once more
