Annihilation-2019
Human beings are interconnected with the environment. In this project, Sammy depicts the human-induced destruction of the environment and its consequences, leading to the potential annihilation of the human body itself. Fashion, functioning as an external adornment and a means of body covering, becomes the most intimate medium linking with the human body. Sammy has chosen to cover tattered gauze with collected tree branches and moss, combining them with natural dyeing techniques, blurring the boundaries between the natural world and human bodies. Through the medium of clothing and the art of poetry, Sammy aims to express her critical reflections on environmental degradation and the intricate relationship between humans and nature.
As human beings, living beings coexisting with nature, what approach should we embrace to heal the heavily scarred Earth and restore ourselves?
On one night
I wander upon a deserted island
Soundlessly I ponder
A plastic, harsh bag
Stabbed into the chest of a fish cadaver
Buried in footprints of clutter
Along with leaves full of dirt, and grit forgotten by history
Just like that
I get pierced by this catastrophe
This moment
Tranquil, as if rumbustious crowds over daylight
Were never a thing
Uncultivated lives and atrovirens lives
Begin to languish around this season
Vanishing without a reason
Leaving behind damp, furry moss
I sat there, silently
That space, seemed to be filled
Solely with the eternal, clear shine of the moon
And endless, stifling particles of haze
A serendipity of sadness bursted in my heart
Hopeless, I have now became native to this island
An archaic tree
Or a parting butterfly
Everlasting or momentaneous
I can touch, and feel
All of their deep sears
Gradually
The island and I, gently blend into dust
Leaving behind
Only traces of a gust
I wondered
And pondered
About things that can cure
Perhaps soft, undefiled gauze
That can cover my blisters
However, I cannot help but surrender
As I have left for the nether
